IMPURE. Journal of Art and Anthropology

IMPURE is a journal dedicated to capturing and disseminating research at the intersection of art and anthropology. It functions as a space of encounter between communities, territories, social urgencies, and artistic inquiry, as well as a site of critical reflection. Published biannually, its contributions emerge from collaborative research and shared practices that approach art and anthropology as twin epistemological disciplines — ways of knowing the human and the more-than-human.

IMPURE embodies contamination and hybridization as vital tools for exploring the contemporary condition. To this end, the journal collaborates with a diverse network of artists, researchers, anthropologists, ethnographers, curators, and art historians.

The journal is independently produced, entirely self-funded, and freely accessible. It operates without financial support from, or institutional affiliation with, state apparatuses or networks associated with Zionism or any other form of illegitimate power.

The editorial team is committed to the free circulation of knowledge and to active opposition against all forms of discrimination, including racism, queerphobia, ableism, sexism, speciesism, and all intersecting systems of oppression.Deeply conscious of its own positionality, the editorial team acknowledges that it is currently composed entirely of individuals from a European background — a situatedness that carries with it specific perspectives, limitations, and privileges. With each issue, the journal strives to foreground a multiplicity of voices and subjectivities, actively expanding the geographies of knowledge beyond the borders from which it operates.

Founded by Salvatore Crucitti and Gloria Zeppilli with Francesco Marano, IMPURE was conceptualized and designed with the contribution of Martina Musìo and Elena Zottola. The current editorial team includes Silvia Carletti, Salvatore Crucitti, Martina Macchia, and Gloria Zeppilli.
